Weekly Newsletter: December 9

December 9, 2018

Good Afternoon James Hill Families,

Well, there was no shortage of excitement this past week! Our Book Fair was a very popular attraction for students and adults alike. We are so thankful to our parent helpers for their hard work to set up and run the Book Fair! We appreciate all the parent and student support to make the Book Fair such a huge success! This year we raised over $5000.00! A significant part of the proceeds will go towards supporting our library resources!

Many staff and students were involved in the Book Fair Door Decorating Contest, which was an impressive showcase of creativity and collaboration. Congratulations to Ms. Clayton’s class for winning the contest. Photos of the doors can be found on our James Hill Facebook page.

James Hill Action Plan for Learning:

You may have heard about our Action Plan for learning in our newsletters and through our Learning in Action Blog on the school website. We wanted to make our two goals around Literacy and Social-Emotional Learning (Zones of Regulation) clear to families as we progress in our instruction throughout the year. We created the student-focused video to help introduce you all to our Action Plan. More information will be shared with families over the upcoming newsletters on how you can support your child at home in our literacy and social-emotional goals!

Christmas Concert Ticket Update:

As we mentioned last week, our evening concert is extremely popular! We have a strong interest in the evening performance as many of our families have working parents. We still have some afternoon seated tickets for those of you who are interested!

To assist with this, if you realize you will not be needing all of your requested evening tickets, we kindly ask you to PLEASE email or phone the office. We will happily give them to an eager family on the waiting list. Tickets will be handed out to youngest children on Wednesday, December 12.

We truly want all family members to be able to watch their children perform. However, we are also needing to heed the fire regulations for the gymnasium occupancy. In order to accommodate everyone, we will continue with the arrival plan as in years past (seated and standing room tickets):

Seated (Red– Evening & Green– Afternoon) Ticket Holders: Gym doors will open at 1:00 and 5:30. Signs will indicate where you can line up once you enter the school. Seated ticket holders will enter the gym first. Seats are on a first come first served basis.

Standing Room (White) Ticket Holders: Gym doors will open at 1:00 and 5:30. Different signs will indicate where to line up once you enter the school (the seated ticket holders and standing room ticket holders will line up in separate areas). Once seated ticket holders have entered the gym, we will allow standing room ticket holders to enter. If any seats remain, feel free to take one. If not, please find a safe spot along the wall (please do not go into blocked off/marked areas as these are for student/staff access).

We do ask that we show courtesy and offer our elderly and physically-challenged family members seats whenever possible, regardless of ticket type.

We will graciously be accepting non-perishable, non-expired food donations at the door to help our JHE food hampers!

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation to make this day a success for all our students and their families!

Christmas Baskets:

We are reaching out to see if any local businesses are interested in donating for our Christmas Baskets to raffle off? If you are interested in donating, please email jameshillpac@gmail.com. Thank you for your generosity!

Inclement Weather:

This week has been particularly cold! Snow and ice are not far away. Please ensure you know what to do if the weather takes a turn for the worst. Here is the information from the District to assist you on these days:

Information About School Status During Inclement Weather

Snow closures and power outages are an annual occurrence in Langley School District.  So where do you go to get information about the status of schools during periods of inclement weather?  If you are able to access the internet via computer or smartphone, current information about Langley schools can be accessed on all school websites or www.sd35.bc.ca.  Updates are also posted to Twitter @LangleySchools and Facebook at www.facebook.com/langleyschooldistrict.  If you don’t have internet connectivity but your phone is working, call a relative or friend in an area that has not been affected by the storm and ask them to check the district website for you.  Local radio stations are also informed of school status in Langley.  Tune in to CKWX 1130AM, CKNW 980AM, Country Radio 107.1FM, Pulse 107.7 or CBC 690AM or 88.1FM for updates.

Please note that Langley District schools are all considered ‘open’ until a decision to close is required.  Decisions on school closures are usually made by 6:30am.  As always, it is a parent’s decision whether to send their child to school based on safety and individual circumstances.  If you feel it is unsafe for you or your child to travel to or attend an open school for any reason, please keep your child home and report an absence to the school.
