Newsletter and the Week Ahead

September 14, 2018

Greetings, James Hill Families!

Our first full week in our permanent classes was a success! We want to send a warm welcome to all of our new JHE families and our kindergartens! Thank you to all the families for your patience as we sorted out the final details. Students are getting settled and connecting with their fellow classmates and teachers. We are excited for a wonderful year!

Last Saturday, our PAC executive hosted a Kindergarten Playdate and it was very well attended. It offered an excellent opportunity for Kindergarten families to connect! Thank you to the PAC parents for your time in organizing this event for our families.

School Supplies:

If you have not already brought in your child’s school supplies, please ensure all materials are at school by Monday, Sept. 17. If you are needing the school supply lists by grade, you can find them here: https://jameshill.sd35.bc.ca/student-life/supplies/

Corn Roast/Meet the Teacher Night: Thurs. Sept. 20, 5:00-7:00 pm:

Every year, our PAC puts on this amazing event for our James Hill Elementary Community! Join us on Thursday, September 20 at 5:00 pm for dinner and then meet the teachers. It is a wonderful way to connect with other families, share a delicious meal and meet the staff! Slips were sent home this week with the food order form (you can also find the order form here: corn roast order form 2018. We couldn’t do this event without many amazing parent volunteers… we need your help! To sign up to volunteer, please visit http://bit.ly/2018CornRoast.

Forms Sent Home:

Today your child will be bringing home a package of forms. This information is very important for our school and we do appreciate the time you take to ensure each form is filled out accurately. Please complete the package and return it to your classroom teacher as soon as possible so we can update our records. Thank you for your assistance with this!

Parking Lot Safety:

We want to ensure the safety of all of our families. When driving into the parking lot to bring your children to school, please use the right lane for drop off only; please do not exit your car when you are in this lane. If you wish to walk your child to the classroom, we ask that you please park in the designated parking lot spaces or on the street.

Please remember to use the outer sidewalks when walking towards the school to ensure everyone’s safety. When parking in the parking lot, please use extreme caution as you cross the drop off/drive through lane towards the school. Thank you for your cooperation to keep all of our students safe!

Extra Clothes:

This week was a reminder that Fall and Winter are just around the corner, and with that comes RAIN and MUD! We recommend that students have an extra pair of clothing to keep at school (especially pants and socks) so they can be comfortable in class should they slip in the muddy grass. Please remember that we will head outside in light rain, so rainboots, a waterproof jacket and warm layers are recommended for the cooler/wetter weather.

Terry Fox Run:

This week we will be collecting coin donations as a fundraiser for the Cancer Society leading up to our Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 21. Please bring your coins each morning! The run will open with an assembly at 9:30 am. Parent volunteers are needed to post along the route to keep kids safe. If you are interested in volunteering, please email ksimonetto@sd35.bc.ca. Please send your child to school Friday with running shoes. Just a reminder that this day is also a School Improvement Day and students are dismissed at 11:36 am.

Breakfast Club:

The Breakfast club is officially open!  Come join us for a delicious and nutritious breakfast each morning. Doors open at 8:00 am and food is served until 8:30 am. Parents are welcome, please be advised that children need to be supervised by parents until 8:15 am.

The Breakfast Club is in desperate need of a freezer- if anyone has an extra one that they do not need, please contact Marg at gmdeibert@shaw.ca.

StrongStart:

Our James Hill StrongStart Program reopened this week Wednesday Sept 12. If you are new to StrongStart, simply bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and you can register in class. What is StrongStart? StrongStart is a complimentary early learning drop in program for children birth to 5 years of age. Parents and/or caregivers attend this program with their children. The StrongStart facilitator, Sam, is a qualified early childhood educator that provides a rich play based learning environment full of activities. Activities provided will promote opportunities where children can make new friends, explore new activities and learn skills that will assist them in the preparation and successful transition to kindergarten. Families are encouraged to PLAY. Check out the Facebook Page “James Hill Elementary StrongStart”. Please feel free to drop in and join Facilitator Sam. The classroom is located on the east side of the school next door to Nurturing Hearts Preschool. Families please enter the program through the exterior door located under the covered area.
